Welcome to our blog: Slices!

At One Green Apple we believe, like you, that students achieve more when educators and families support each other. And, we believe that every family that wants a voice in this partnership should have one.

When our nation’s children are concerned, we are all in this together.

We’re touched by the accounts of how educational support at home positively affects students. The FACE Handbook, provided by the School Community Network, offers a practical and thoughtful overview of the best research and practices related to engaging families and communities in students’ learning and their academic, social, and emotional development.

Innovative and impressive initiatives are taking place throughout the country. If you’d like to know about which states have enacted legislation around family engagement, we suggest checking out the National PTA’s State Laws on Family Engagement in Education which serves as a resource for State PTAs and other family and child advocates to increase systemic, effective family engagement in all of our nation’s public schools.

Educators and administrators might find SEDL’s Partners in Education: A Dual Capacity-Building Framework for Family–School Partnerships helpful in seeding the path toward effective family engagement efforts that are linked to student achievement and school improvement. Developed in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Education, SEDL shares that the framework "was formulated using the research on effective family engagement and home–school partnership strategies and practices, adult learning and motivation, and leadership development.”

The Harvard Family Research Project offers an inspiring view on Taking the Lead in Family Engagement: A Message to our Followers on Presidents Day. This reflection on leadership and what it means for family engagement shares examples of the roles leaders have played in the evolution of family engagement in this country and shares their editorial focus for the coming year. (They’re looking for input!)

Our hopes and dreams for this blog?

We want to connect people – teachers, parents, principals, advocates, grandparents, supporters, school administrators, researchers, governors, program managers, directors, and coalition leaders (just to name a few) – with each other for encouragement and insights and to share resources – like those mentioned above – that inspire them on the path to engagement.

We will be curating best practices, research, and news and also sharing stories to celebrate how successful family engagement is helping to boost student achievement and ultimately transform lives. Positivity is the key to long-term success. You won’t see blogs here with scary, negative headlines intent on alarming you or keeping you up at night.

We do this because we want to help you in your work, make it easy for you to share information with your network of people who are passionate about advancing family engagement. And we want to learn from you.

Share your slice of inspiration, knowledge, or opinion.

We welcome, appreciate, and encourage your feedback and input. Share your thoughts, your expertise, or the thoughts and expertise of others that you feel are important to share with the community of people who follow this blog. We invite polite discussion in any comments and it’s ok to include a link to relevant content (no spam, please.) We reserve the right to delete any comments that include language or concepts that could be deemed offensive. Of course, if there’s any reason you’d like to take the conversation offline, please email us at  questions@onegreenapple.com. We look forward to hearing from you!
